Thomas Skaggs

I am a native of the Midwest, and I try to bring my background in the studies of art, landscape architecture, and architecture into my designs with wood. I studied art at the University of Iowa and Parkland College and received a XXXX in Fine Art and Design. I went on to get a XXXX in Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois with additional studies in historic architecture.

With an interest in old houses I first acquired tools to renovate our own home. My love of furniture and design soon transitioned my interest and skills from carpentry to fine woodworking. I am predominantly a self taught artisan. I began my woodworking by designing and making furniture in the genre of the Federal Style. While original in design, my early works were inspired by my interest and studies in historic architecture and related design.

My background in art then began to influence my furniture designs. Keeping an appreciation for classic furniture design and form, I have evolved my style to allow for greater personal expression. I now create my furniture to be seen as art but also as functional pieces that are complimentary to a variety of interior settings.

My background in landscape architecture also factors into my designs. I have a great appreciation for trees and the natural beauty of wood, and I strive to emphasize that in my work. I use solid hardwoods in all of my work. I use only wood from reliable sources for environmentally responsibly harvested trees. While I occasionally use exotic woods, I often find that native hardwoods can yield amazing figure and beauty.

I have had the good fortune of having my work published in Fine Woodworking and a feature article in the first issue of Woodcraft. Both were great honors for me.

I design all of my own work, the majority of which are unique, one-of-a-kind creations. I strive to explore new avenues of design, craftsmanship and artistic expression. Nature provides the most beautiful of materials. My work celebrates that beauty while offering function, style, and personal expression.
